1930 Chestnut Log Home
The owners of this log home, in the Greenwood Lake area of New York state, had spent weeks sanding down the old finish before they called us. We used a corncob blaster that is similar to a sand blaster without the severe effects of sand. After we removed the old paint and finish, we cleaned and neutralized the wood, then applied two coats of a high quality sealer. These chestnut logs are not notched together, but are toe-nailed. The integrity of this log home is maintained through the mortar that had been applied between the logs. We left the original mortar chinking intact and applied modern chinking (color-matched) over the original. In addition we rebuilt the deck and stairs when we restored this 1930's log home.
The chestnut tree died off in the 1930s and early 40s due to blight. This disease is still in the ground because new growth gets just so big and all the leaves turn brown and the tree dies. For this reason, chestnut logs are rare. These log homes are historical and should be valued like an antique.

18th Century Log Cabin
First vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, this cabin was built on granite stones and off the ground so the air could circulate under it. This cabin's floor beams were in excellent shape, but there was some rot on the bottom logs. Apparently, the cabin had been sealed with a mixture of turpentine and linseed oil. In 2001, we cleaned, neutralized, sanded, sealed, chinked and replaced damaged logs. During our restoration, we left the ax marks and initials on log left there years ago (probably from young boys).
